questions surround him: who is he, where did he come from, why is he here? the first is easy to answer: he knows who he was, and who he's had to become. the second is less easy: home is nothing but a faded and distant memory that haunts and encourages him. as to why he's here, he doesn't know. for someone who pretends to have all the answers, he knows very little. throughout history, his appearance has been seen as a sign β€” a blessing or an omen, that's for others to decide.

he has little say on the matter. he has no say in any of this. if he wants to return home to who he was, he must be a blessing, an omen, a myth, and a tool to whoever or whatever keeps him a prisoner. he is a friend. he is a brother. he is a lover. he is the fool or the liar. the pacifist, the fighter, the coward, the zealot, the dilettante. he is whoever he needs to be to accomplish his assignment. he has his method: charm or threaten. coax or bribe. persuade or confuse. kindhearted or brutish. he's adaptable. survival is inside his dna. he can't give up, especially not after everything he's done. his hands are too soaked with blood to stop now. his past means nothing, but his future is everything.

so he continues to drift on the currents of time, lurching from one era to another, one disaster to another, one war to another. there's a purpose to it; a job he must complete in every place and time he goes. the currents are merciful and bring him where he needs to be, but their mercy only extends so far. sometimes the jobs are quick and simple, such as delivering a book to a child. mostly, however, they're long, messy, and complicated. if he can, he does it by himself, but on occasion, he is forced to seek help from other people. he keeps them at arm's length, partially from distrust but mostly to avoid hurt and grief. his behavior suggests a flippancy and disregard for others, but he feels more than what shows in his sharp smirks and charming words. if someone is kind or useful to him, he's loyal and will go out of his way to help them; however, he's not averse to betraying them if it benefits him.

he keeps a low profile, unless the job demands otherwise. he's lost track of how long he's been on the currents, but it's been long enough that he's skilled and experienced at what he does. he's tired, jaded, bored, and maybe a little disassociated from people. though he tries to see the good in man and himself, he feels his hope and humanity slipping through his fingers with each trip. but he continues because what else is he supposed to do? and he's good at what he does: lying, cheating, stealing, and killing. maybe that's why he's here: he's the only one capable of this. or maybe he was deemed expendable, and that's why he's here. on several occasions, he has died, but he always comes back and completes the job.

survival is inside his dna. one day he'll return home, and this will be nothing but a faded and distant memory.

he could be likened to a cuckoo bird, being a cunning master of misdirection and deception. perhaps a chameleon is a more apt comparison, however, as he tailors himself to match the situation and person. he is both charming and repugnant, aloof and passionate. an open book and a locked door. he is whatever he needs to be for the job. and while his core personality rarely varies, the presentation of himself does. some identities are cocky and outspoken, while others are reserved and grim.

when introducing himself, he commonly uses "jack klein", but there are variations: john klein, joseph klein, james klein, etc. sometimes to match the area's demographic better or if he'll reappear in the area or time, his surname is altered. he will impersonate the living or deceased, stealing and using their identities. pseudonyms are also given to him by others: "the stranger", "a friend of ours", or "that fucking guy."

attire — anything that suits his current identity and persona. if he had a choice, though, he would wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, such as t-shirts and sweats. he's one baja blast away from dressing like adam sandler again.
aural — a rich baritone voice with a playful lilt that can easily shift to cold, hard steel when angry. seemingly nondescript, but with some words, an unknown accent lingers in the way he rolls his tongue. some can detect a new england accent, but he never specifies an origin. like many things about him, his accent remains a mystery, but it's nothing suspicious or unexplainable.
demeanor — it varies on the circumstances of the meeting. in a normal setting, he presents himself as your friend: calm, kind, attentive, and charming; all an act designed to put people at ease and lull them into a false sense of security. but behind every smile is the impression that he knows more than he lets on. it's said that he's a sun that pours forth light but never warmth. he's useful enough, however, that people tolerate his evasiveness about his true identity and intentions.
olfactory — clean and mild, like a meadow after a rainstorm β€” the smell of time. he rarely wears cologne but will if there's a purpose.
visual — late 20s or early 30s. 6'2" of hard muscles and explosive energy. wiry but stronger than he appears. several faint and small scars on his knuckles and palms. sharp blue eyes with a suggestive glint (either amusement or a controlled but hair-trigger violence). brown hair whose length and style vary depending on the era. he prefers to be clean-shaven, but sometimes has facial hair. a handsome face, and he knows it.

  • photographic memory.
  • talented actor and an excellent and persuasive talker; quick on his toes and can adjust to things as they happen.
  • expert in espionage and counterespionage techniques.
  • trained in krav maga, but experienced enough in hand-to-hand combat that his style is a mish-mash of that and several others. he is unpredictable and relentless, and can easily switch between orthodox and southpaw stances. his fists are cinderblocks.
  • skilled marksman.
  • capable mechanic and adequate pilot (he can take off and usually land well enough).
  • decent at horseback riding, swordsmanship, and archery.
  • lockpicking and escapology.
  • competent forger.
  • fluent in english, french, german, italian, polish, russian, and spanish. not 100% fluent in yiddish or hebrew but knows enough to get in and out of trouble. he has, however, understood everyone he has encountered, even when they speak a language he doesn't know.
  • good at anagrams, cryptograms, logic puzzles, and riddles. really likes spot the difference puzzles.
  • decent singer and dancer.

canon — original.
assumed cryes. good with anything ranging from friendly to antagonistic.
flirtingyes, but don't be surprised when it doesn't lead to anything. he'll flirt, but 95% of the time it's a disingenuous manipulation tactic to get something. if you'd prefer he didn't flirt with your character, please let me know, and he'll stop.
shipping — he has a lot going on right now, so he's not looking for it. i'm not too interested in it either, but if there's chemistry and prior cr or discussion, then yes.

m/f late 20s/early 30s

not interested: cross medium (except in certain cases, so ask first!) or aged up characters. 63!characters are iffy.
smutyes. i can do smut without emotions. anything involving emotions, i'd prefer some discussion and prior cr first.
physical contactdepends. superficial and casual contact, such as handshakes and high-fives, is fine. anything intimate, such as hugging or kissing will be declined (unless there's established cr or it's relevant to a mission).
fightingPLEASE. let me give him a "do you hear spanish guitars?" moment. his first instinct is to avoid violence, but he will el kabong someone when all other options are exhausted.
telepathy/mind controllet's plot first! but his mind is such a weird and jumbled mess of believable lies and unbelievable truths that it'd be difficult to untangle and decipher anything.
injury — minor: always. major: let's plot.
deathyes with discussion.

contact — my pms are always open. happy to give out socials after some ooc chatter.
activity — pretty quick for texts. med to slow for longer tags.
backtagging — yes. yes. yes.
thread-jacking — when appropriate and only with approval from all parties involved.
fourth wall-breaking — ditto.
style — brackets and present tense (though future tense will happen, of course).
tag length — i tend to write longer tags but don't feel obligated to match my word count. short is sometimes better. i will, however, lose interest and drop if i consistently get one-sentence responses, especially for introspective or action-heavy threads.
offensive subjects/triggers — none for me.
